App analyst Alessandro Paluzzi has reavealed that soci media giant Instagram is reportedly planning to send 2FA codes to chatting and messaging platform WhatsApp.

For the unversed, 2FA refers to two-factor authentication, or user verification through two separate stages. As of now, 2FA-type user verification on Instagram is available only through an Authentication app, making use of login requests, text messages, and backup codes. If the WhatsApp version becomes a reality however, users will be able to receive receive 2FA codes directly onto their WhatsApp accounts.

For WhatsApp to become compatible with 2FA for Instagram on their phones, users will have to be enable text message authentication to toggle on WhatsApp.

Moreover, users will have the option to never use it, or make use of Authentication apps. There’s a number of those available on the market, ranging from the one at Google, or the one at Microsoft.

What about WhatsApp’s new privacy policy?

Well, Facebook has got itself surrounded by yet another privacy-related controversy. This time it is related to the new privacy policy of WhatsApp that users would need to accept to use the platform with full potential. While Facebook hasn’t really started limiting features, it is expected to do so further down the road.

Multi-Device Login Made Easier

This comes even as WhatsApp works to make its multi-device system available to users, and 2FA will help people easily log into their accounts on Instagram, even if their main device is off.

As of now, the app is still under development, and details on whether it will be made available on Android or Apple, have not yet been revealed.

How It Will Work

As per Paluzzi’s Twitter posts, he was able to turn the option ON through his phone somehow, and he displayed through some photos how the authentication will work.

Once the 2FA has been switched on through the users’ Instagram account, they will be asked to enable SMS notifications, so that the code can be sent to them. Following this, they will be required to enter their mobile number so that their WhatsApp account can be verified.

Users will also be informed that Whatsapp won’t be saving any of the data they enter.

Facebook appears to be working on a new security feature for its photo-sharing platform, Instagram. We’re talking about a small yet major change in two-factor authentication. When it comes to security, the 2FA method has widely been adopted since its initial release. Instagram also offers multiple ways to implement the 2FA method on your account. The app allows you to use 2FA through an authenticator app, text message, login request, and backup codes.

Well, it looks like Instagram is adding a new way to enable two-factor authentication to the already available list.

Facebook will soon allow users to send 2FA codes to their WhatsApp account. This new information is coming from a popular leaker Alessandro Paluzzi. The leaker has also posted screenshots showcasing the feature. As you can see, there’s a WhatsApp option now under the list of ‘How You Get Authentication Codes’. The description mentions that you need to first enable SMS and then the code will arrive on your WhatsApp. Of course, you will need to connect your WhatsApp account to Instagram to make use of this upcoming feature.

Of course, this feature is going to be optional so if you have any concern over privacy, you can decide to stay away from it. The feature is currently in the development stage meaning there’s no clue as to when it will make its way to the Android or iOS app. It would be interesting to see how well the feature will be received whenever it goes official. Personally, I would still prefer to use my authenticator app over getting 2FA codes on WhatsApp.

Apart from this, Facebook is also working on an improved user experience for Instagram on the web. The new redesign will allow users to post photos and videos from the web version of the platform. Well, these are something that you can not do as of now. Apart from this, you’ll also get other features such as cropping the image, applying filters, setting up a description, and more. Basically, we’re looking at the same user experience of post creation that you get on mobile apps.

Two-factor authentication is one of the most basic steps you can take to make your account more secure.

A lot of apps use SMS-based authentication to send you a One Time Password (OPT) as the second factor of verification. However, researchers have noted that that relying on SMS can be less secure, as hackers have been using techniques like SIM Swapping to redirect 2FA codes.

To solve that problem, Instagram is working on a feature to send you 2FA codes through WhatsApp. App researcher and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi posted screenshots of this feature under development.

These screenshots suggest that Instagram will verify your WhatsApp account through an SMS-based code, which seems counterintuitive at first because the whole point is to remove text messages from the equation. Anyway, once you confirm your WhatsApp account, you can get 2FA codes on the chat app for subsequent logins.

Notably, the screenshots suggest that WhatsApp won’t store any of your data. So, Instagram is not technically ‘linking’ two accounts here.

We don’t yet exactly when this feature will drop, so don’t get excited just yet.
